Tuesday evening’s power outage along the Carcross Road through to Tagish was caused by the forest fire north of Emerald Lake, says the manager of ATCO Electric Yukon.

Jay Massie said Wednesday afternoon ATCO was contacted by Yukon Wildland Fire Management asking for the power to be shut off because of a bush fire sparked by a tree falling against the line.

It was shut off at approximately 7:30 and restored an hour later, he said.

Massie said the outage affected 770 customers along the Carcross Road and in Carcross and Tagish.

A shorter outage at 6:30 Wednesday morning for the same area was caused by a squirrel that got in the electrical gear located at the government yard in Carcross, he said.

Massie said ATCO would like to emphasize if somebody sees a tree on a power line, do not attempt to remove it but rather notify ATCO because it can be a dangerous situation.

“We have people on 24-7,” he said.
