Few details were available this morning after “hold-and-secure” situations were put in place at Elijah Smith Elementary School and École Émilie-Tremblay.

The “hold-and-secure” orders were lifted later in the morning.

In a brief emailed statement late this morning, Kyle Nightingale, a Department of Education spokesman, said:

“Elijah Smith Elementary School and École Émilie-Tremblay activated their emergency plans as a precaution this morning at the advice of the RCMP. All students were kept safe inside of the schools and doors were locked.

“The situation has since been resolved and the RCMP advised schools to return to normal school operations before lunch time. Schools will be notifying parents.

“Any further questions should be directed to the RCMP.”

Yukon RCMP spokeswoman Julia Fox said details would not be available until after the Star’s press deadline this afternoon.

A number of RCMP vehicles and an estimated dozen heavily-armed officers were seen today around Sandpiper Drive in Arkell, a neighbourhood near the two schools.

While Elijah Smith Elementary is just off Hamilton Boulevard between the McIntyre and Arkell neighbourhoods, École Émilie-Tremblay is in Copper Ridge (a neighbourhood a bit further up Hamilton Boulevard) off Falcon Drive.

Fox stressed that the schools were not in a lockdown situation.

Rather, she stated: “The schools were advised to be in “hold-and-secure” only situation and not a lockdown.

“That ‘hold-and-secure’ has since been lifted.”

The residential street was quiet again by early this afternoon.

Would love to have a time machine and go back 20 or 40 years ago to a time when Whitehorse didn't have all these nasty big city problems.
