Cyclist assaults elderly woman in Riverdale

A local woman is suffering minor injuries after being assaulted Sunday afternoon just outside a Riverdale apartment building.

By Stephanie Waddell on August 12, 2014

A local woman is suffering minor injuries after being assaulted Sunday afternoon just outside a Riverdale apartment building.

Whitehorse RCMP are searching for a male suspect.

Carol Boschman spoke to reporters late this morning near the scene outside the Pines Apartment building next to the Super A store in the neighbourhood.

She said she had been walking up Lewes Boulevard on Sunday afternoon when a red bicycle “flew by me” on the sidewalk next to the grocery store.

As he sped past her, the 70-year-old woman told him he was breaking the law, that bicycles aren’t allowed on sidewalks and there is a clearly marked bike lane on the road.

Boschman said the cyclist pulled his bike into the bicycle racks at the apartment building next door.

She could hear him saying something unclear, something that might have been directed at her.

She proceeded to move over to the bike racks, saying, “Pardon?” and stating all she did was to tell him that he had been breaking the city’s bylaw by pedalling on the sidewalk.

It was then he began raising his voice, yelling at her to “Get away, get out of here!”

“What put him into such a rage, I don’t know,” she said.

As Boschman stood there shocked that her comment would elicit such anger, he slapped her face three times.

“I couldn’t believe what was happening,” said Boschman, noting she was so stunned she didn’t move.

He then proceeded to grab her by her shoulders and push her to the ground before he snatched his bike and took off through the parking lot of the Super A store.

“Fortunately, I fell on the grass,” she said, her arm in a sling.

It took her a couple of tries to get up off the ground, and when she did, she screamed for help.

Staff from the neighbouring Macaulay Lodge as well as a passersby and a resident of the apartment soon came to the scene, one heading to the Super A to call the RCMP and others remaining with Boschman until police arrived.

After the RCMP constable took her statement and those of witnesses who arrived after the assault, he offered to take her to the hospital “just to be on the safe side,” she explained.

Fortunately, she had no broken bones, but her left arm did have some soft tissue inflammation and since then she has noticed some pain in her hip.

She was provided with a sling for her arm.

RCMP sent out a media release today, seeking the public’s help in locating the man.

It was at about 2:10 p.m. Sunday when police received a report from the man who said he had just witnessed an assault on a woman near the Macaulay Lodge.

He told police he had seen a man holding an elderly woman by her arms, then striking her in the face.

He ran to the woman and the suspect fled the area on a bicycle.

The suspect is described as being approximately five feet, 10 inches in height, with a medium build and about 50 years old.

He has shorter dark hair and was wearing prescription glasses.

He wore a red coat with reflective patches on the side and dark pants, and was wearing a dark hat.

The investigation into the assault is continuing.

Anyone with any information regarding this incident and the suspect involved is asked to contact Whitehorse RCMP at 667-5551.

Boschman noted that while she hasn’t been assaulted like this, there is an ongoing problem of cyclists and skateboards using the sidewalk, creating a safety risk to pedestrians.

A resident of the neighbourhood who doesn’t drive, she is often out walking, and has noticed more and more bicycles and skateboards on the sidewalk.

There have been many times, she said, where skateboards flip up right behind or in front of pedestrians.

She noted her hope the city’s bylaw department will keep a closer watch on the city sidewalks and enforce its regulations.

Whitehorse is an anti-cyclist city. Cycling should be a major mode of transportation. ALL lanes should be used by cyclists. Cyclists should NOT be afraid of motorists. And motorists should be ashamed of harassing cyclists. Take away all bike lanes, take away all cyclist harassment laws, get cyclists a discount to the CGC, as an encouragement away from cars.
This lady was right to criticise the cyclist for being on the sidewalk. But went way beyond proper human behaviour to go and confront that person whom she did not know. The guy in question was also of course wrong to be violent.
Some people have the fatal flaw that they think they can say any s**t to anyone and the bast Big Brother Government will protect them from their ineptness. People need to take some responsibility for their actions.
I am happy to say that is essentially what she said on the radio this morning, don't be an idiot, don't walk up to strangers and confront them, you're looking for trouble. Lesson learned for everyone.
Make Whitehorse a pro-cyclist city by reducing motorist privileges and increasing cycling privileges.

Yukon56....Unfortunently you make yourself look like the gag in that joke if you don't realize Bylaw doesn't enforce traffic violations such as no headlights or broken tail lights. That falls under the RCMP's authority. There are many different agencies that are responsible for enforcing many different types of laws and regulations. The Fire Department, YTG animal welfare, Bylaw Services, the Liquor Corp, Yukon housing, etc etc...You should educate youself before making an uneducated comment.

The more I read this story the more suspicious I get. How do we know exactly what occurred? Why haven't they caught this guy yet? I love the line of this elderly lady not being able to hear what the guy said so she went over to get a better listen lmao. I call BS on all of this.

I shake my head at the posters who say that people should just keep their heads down and say nothing when they see something wrong because if they speak up, something bad might happen to them. And if it does, it's 'their fault' for trying to correct something. What a bunch of cowards. No wonder the world is as it is.

Good for you for trying to set things straight, Carol. He is a nut, and it's too bad you had to pay the price but there's no question now. I doubt very much this is the first time he has pulled a stunt like this one but now the cops have what they need to charge him. Let's get him caught and dealt with.

Real Cyclist on Aug 15, 2014 at 8:19 am

hi, I have represented the Yukon proudly many times at national and North American level cycling races over the years. I also commute on a regular basis to my job (weather depending).

No one should ever have any excuse or reason, EVER! to assault an elderly person. In the end people should not be assaulting each other anyway. Some cyclists seem to get a phenomenal amount of road rage, and I don't get it. Maybe they are riding for other reasons than I do. I ride because I enjoy riding and because I like to be fit. Just because I ride doesn't mean I get mad at people with big trucks or old muscle cars, I actually have an old muscle car my self. I don't ride to prove a point. Please I urge people who read this article not to get mad at all cyclists because of this incident. I am a cyclist and I am mad at the individual who did this. This is one individual, not all of the cyclists.

why the hate of cyclists? on Aug 14, 2014 at 8:23 pm

That this woman was assaulted is horrible. I agree with some of the commenters that you have to be careful who you 'give advice' to…..this assailant sounds like he has mental problems, maybe Autism, and as an older woman it is sad but important to protect yourself and call the police or bylaw when you are home, not deal with it yourself. I agree too that cyclists and boarders should be considerate on the roadways or sidewalks if they using them. The only thing I don't understand here is the hatred of cyclists…I'm a life long Yukoner and some of the back woods attitudes are really appalling. This story is about a woman being assaulted. As a motorist and a cyclist, I'm happy when I don't have to contend with another person going slow in their vehicle, or speeding, or texting and driving, or drinking and driving….seems to me to be a lot more annoyances by fellow motorists than cyclists. And it's NEVER acceptable in your vehicle to take matters in your own hands and 'teach' the cyclist a life ending lesson. Let's all get along on the roads/paths and remember that cyclists are mothers, fathers, children, teenagers, seniors and most importantly, just trying to get from point A to B without causing you to be behind another truck, car, etc. And cyclists, be good ambassadors. I also find it annoying when somebody is riding in traffic going the wrong way, no helmets, or on sidewalks in a reckless way.

Its just a big social experiment....Yukon meets big City and the battles of the righteous....lots of drama from the meek and humble greenies and then POW....beating an elderly lady....I would respond to that scenario if I witnessed it and the biker would become very sorry.....thing is I don't ever want to see something like that.
Bikers you are required to follow the rules under the motor vehicles act when on/around roadways.....get off your high horse and walk or drive a car if you can't follow them.....sad part is 'when' a cyclist gets drilled by a motor vehicle in this City the cries of 'oh my the meek and humble cyclist was struck', will echo.

Yes there is a bike lane where this incident happened. You can see it marked at 0:24 In the CBC news at:
http://www.cbc.ca/player/News/Canada/North/ID/2487500858/

The cyclist was in the wrong and assaulted the pedestrian. Catch him and charge him. Of course if he is one of the many 'special needs' people who just 'forget' to take his meds, it will get complicated.

For some one to claim that this thug wasn't a cyclist because in order to assault this woman he got off his bike and walked up to her, displays the lack of logical thought. One wonders is Brn operates under the entitled to do as he or she likes code which is how it appears a great many of cyclists in this town seem to do. Many ride on sidewalks and though crosswalks. Most do not yield to pedestrians who are using crosswalks. Others ride against the flow of traffic. Only rarely some actually signal for stops, turns and lane changes. As person who walks or rides the bus most of the time, and drives occasionally, I know that cyclist in this town either are ignorant of the rules of the road or don't have the courtesy to follow them.

Hey ATV'er...that was fantastic, really!
Funny how it always seems to digress into cyclists & city snobs against how we live here eh?
That said for clarity I own not any ORV's, but two dogs and walk our trail network like a lunatic and had never had ONE issue with a dirt bike, sled, those other pricey 4wheeler units ever. Why you may ponder?

As when we do the public trails my dogs are tethered to a leash...a short leash.
When off leash they are within 30 yards and I am vigilant on external distractions. Such as machinery, critters of many types, other dog owners whom have nary a clue, glass & needles (trail depending) and if a dog owner says they "sped up on us and startled the dogs"...crap...pure crap as when paying attention you can hear near everything approaching.
Everyone driving by slows right down, two kids from Crestview go over the top...getting off their bikes and walking by (seriously). One dirt biker here in PC was a issue, not on the trails but the roads...most everyone here remembers how that went.

Far from the assault that story yes, but my point was I do have many issues with cyclists on said trail network often.
My experience dictates they do not like being put off the pedestal they hoist themselves on either.
I so hope I never see anyone slapping out a 70 year old anyone in this new hipper "Whitehorse"...ever.

@BnR ... Regardless of if you are or aren't your really sounding like one of those whiny cyclists. First off you shouldn't have to be careful when confronting someone, you have every right to voice your concern and they have no right to lay a finger on you in response. This is a rare instance in which the cyclist (yes cyclist not pedestrian, you cant shake that truth away) responded with assault, and it should be handled as such with no cautionary for the victim of consequences, that's not how this works. And secondly "this happens to walkers confronting atv'ers in green belts"!?!?!?! Ummm please find me the basis for that statement.
We are on atvs if we don't like what your trying to argue with us about it's a simple have a nice day and we ride away, however someone walking who feels the need to whine to atv'ers about their own laws they created in their minds or hope will get passed in law might be so inclined so stand in our way or throw logs down to flip us. The only assault you experience is a visual one, because you despise beautiful machines so strongly. I'm sorry for the visual assault on your virgin cyclist eyes when we meet in no mans land. I hope this lady is okay and doesn't feel inclined to not speak her mind if this happens again. Cyclists have rules too, they just don't seem to care.

Ok, she was not assaulted by a cyclist. She was assaulted by a pedestrian. The person in question had put away the bike and walked backed to "assault" her.
She alleges he "flew" past her, it's all perception. We have no idea if this was a dangerous situation or not.
And really, wearing your arm in a sling is a bit melodramatic is it not?
However, the gentleman in questions behaviour is completely unacceptable and if found, he should be charged with assault, but I suspect there are probably some mental health issues at work here with respect to the accused.
The one salient point here is that if you are going to confront people, you need to be prepared for the consequences of your actions, right or wrong. This has happened before with walkers confronting ATV users in green belts and getting assaulted.

While I feel terrible this woman was assaulted, there is a growing issue with bicycles and vehicles in this town. I commute to and from Hospital Road daily and wonder why these "bike paths or widened sidewalks" to accommodate bicycles and such are not being used more. I had a man riding his bicycle with his dog running on a leash beside him on the bridge deck causing traffic to back up since my truck mirrors would have struck the bicyclist. Didn't "the community" complain about bike lanes? They were built because of an "apparent need", please use them.

So now it is alleged that intolerance and lawlessness and even (my interp) arrogance are there too (total sarc.)?
Who wudda thought a bicycle enthusiast would freak out like that?
OK I thought that, yes they get REAL REAL pissy those cyclists when you tell them to have consideration and they should follow the rules too.
Carol please do not hold your breath on by-law enforcing much of anything except (GASP)...your meter expired.
The entire by-law department has it pretty good why would they compromise their complacency and actually enforce anything.
Just look anywhere in town at your hood, then check out some of the many bylaws currently...yes they do the bare minimum at best and set their system up to be "complaint" driven so they need not be proactive...unless the low hanging fruit as our Sima piggy banks...a.k.a parking meters.

Too bad this happened to you Carol, but the town you knew years ago?
Yeah it has long left, and this generic stye full of people, angry people at that has now replaced our wee town.
Since we give murders time in culture camp for the first, maybe second offense...if caught and maaaaybe convicted then what?
Wonder how that would have gone had someone with "a set" got involved and doled out a whoopin'...rhetorical as we are required under law to be victims not victors.

Can't believe "Biker" is proud of being one of those people who ride on the sidewalk. I guess it's better for people walking to be in fear of you than you being in fear of the traffic. Maybe you should learn how to ride a bike better; then all those lovely bike lanes that we pay for you to have could be used and you would feel safe again.

This is horrible! Poor women.
As I driver I must point out that perhaps the roads would not be so "dangerous" to cyclists if they followed the road laws and not flip back and forth between pedestrian and biker (which are to follow the same road rules as a car) when it's convenient for them. Also have a little understanding and remember vehicles have blind spots and can't stop as fast at a biker. Can't tell you how many times an ignorant rude biker has almost caused an accident.
The sidewalk is for walking. I hope this woman is okay and the man responsible is caught.

Just another reason why the cyclists in this town should have more strict rules. So many of theses ahole bikers in this town get away with too much! Maybe if you want to share the road the cyclists should be required to have a licence, a licence plate so we can report, pay insurance, have blinkers and properly working brake lights just like EVERYONE ELSE that is on the road.
