Council hears pros and cons about boat launch

Adding a boat launch and sea can storage to an area on the eastern shore of Schwatka Lake would mean “forever creating a blemish” on the pristine area, says Erin Benoit.

Adding a boat launch and sea can storage to an area on the eastern shore of Schwatka Lake would mean “forever creating a blemish” on the pristine area, says Erin Benoit.

Benoit addressed city council Monday evening during a public input session on the conditional use application put forward by the Yukon Breeze Sailing Society.

The group is pursuing a new boat launch, dock and storage at the lake, where it plans to operate its classes and camps this summer.

Throughout her presentation, Benoit spoke of using the trail through the area and taking in the natural surroundings.

“I use that trail throughout the year,” she said.

Permitting the sailing society to proceed with its plans could open the door for what Benoit deemed as more private use of the lake.

The area, she said, should be for all to enjoy.

Benoit took issue as well with the two sea cans that would be placed near the boat launch for storage, arguing the “extremely industrial” looking sea cans will be visible from the roadway.

It’s sad that council is even considering permitting this type of project, she said after calling on the city to hold off on the matter to allow more time for public consultation.

Yukon Breeze president Dave Hildes was quick to counter her points, strongly stating there would never be fencing preventing access to the trail.

Rather, the fencing would be in place between the two sea cans as a dry-land classroom area, he explained.

Hildes also spoke of plans for mural painting on the sea cans to make the large storage containers more aesthetically pleasing.

Hildes emphasized the group would not be blocking access to anyone else looking to use the lake.

It’s a non-profit society with membership rates as low as $5, he added.

Part of the reason Yukon Breeze is based on Schwatka Lake is to make themselves more visible in the community, Hildes said, choosing the major lake in Whitehorse over other areas like the Southern Lakes.

“We want people to join us,” he said, stressing the group does not want to interfere with the area’s other uses.

Answering questions from Coun. John Streicker, Hildes explained the main focus for Yukon Breeze is on its summer camps – four week-long camps for about a dozen youth ages six to 14.

The group also plans to host a few sailing lessons in the evenings for adults.

Outside of the two sea cans on the ground and the connecting fence between them, there would be little change on land and the group believes there is enough room for all users to take in the water.

“The lake is big enough for all of us,” Hildes said when questioned by Coun. Dave Stockdale about whether other uses – such as the comings and goings of float planes – could be compromised.

At least one float plane operator is ready to welcome the sailing group.

Pilot Rick Ward also spoke at the input session Monday, stating the different uses on the lake are not a problem.

“The lake is a multi-use resource,” he said, describing the sailing club as “just another positive” for the city.

As he pointed out, there aren’t any other formal opportunities in the city to learn to sail.

A report on the public input session will come back to council next week, with members then set to vote on the conditional use in June.

Why don't they sail on Chadburn Lake? That's a beautiful, big lake and I don't know if motorboats are even allowed.

Here is Dave Hildes saying the lake is big enough for everyone. Yet I heard him, or maybe it was a different guy, on the radio saying people are going to Schwatka to party. Well, yeah. It's a lake close to town. It's beautiful out. But it seems what he was saying, was the partying conflicts with the sailors' frame of mind and also motorboats are hazardous to the sailing.

What I think he's saying is that the lake is big enough for everyone till he gets the permission he seeks. I think that there will never be fencing, until they figure enough time has passed that everyone has forgotten, and then they're really going to "need" fencing.

And I think murals are no substitute for a view of the open lake. I love the character of Schwatka Lake, the planes, the occasional partying, the occasional jumble of people when it's hot out, it's easygoing vibe. Chadburn Lake seems more suitable for a sailing school, especially if they're going to get all prissy about other people enjoying themselves.

Sailboats have no place on a busy float plane lake. They can go pursue their hobby at Chadburn lake, it's non-motorized, so they'll fit right in.

As well, they can trailer their toys just like the rest of us. We don't need elitists thinking they can clutter up our wilderness with ugly sea-cans. Put a sea-can in YOUR back yard if you want to store your gear in one.

We'll see if the mods allow this as they haven't posted my comments lately....I admit I've become a bit churlish in this silly City of late.
Schwatka is a zoo......much of the problem is the lack of etiquette required by all users. I mean the dock is littered with sun worshippers these past few weeks....so where the hell do boats dock?!
And the boats don't even think about the float planes .....it's insane.
So I'm skeptical this would not create more problems.....problems that aren't being addressed by anyone at the present.
I love sailing, it's old and tried and brought all us Europeans here but they likely need to find a different lake.....sorry sailing club my two cents.

No Sea Cans on May 28, 2015 at 2:48 pm

Do as Tatshenshini Expediting does (and other companies as well) when they teach/train on the Yukon River or at Chadburn Lake or anywhere else. Load it all up in trucks, vans, canoehaulers, etc., unload it, use it, load it back up and take it home. You keep your junk in your yard and I'll keep mine in my yard. Let's keep the natural spots natural for all to enjoy.

Jim, I agree, I use the float plane service and I have had to circuit several times so boats could clear a path. Now dodging kids in sail boats. I am not a sailor but support old world technology and activities. It's comparable to Blacksmithing seeing as almost no one is doing either. I wish the club luck and would encourage people to expose their children to the activity, but a less popular lake may be a better solution. Fish lake maybe?
As for the C-cans and such, a mural would make it less ugly, but safe storage is a priority. So people are free to look the other way as they pass your storage lockers.

It already looks like s**t with the three sea cans on the Riverdale side. The COW really needs to step back and stop all this catering to the loudest. It's ridiculous.
I don't understand why everybody has to have something special for them. If I want to go to the lake with my boat then I haul it there, go out and haul it home.

They don't absolutely need sea cans there. Buy a trailer and haul it like all the other groups do. Not against the idea of sailing on Swatka but the sea cans and fencing are just another storage area unless all the other groups can have access to it. Otherwise what's stopping every other group from making an area and storing equipment or stuff. A nice sized enclosed trailer pulled behind a truck to and from, load some fold up chairs and fold up drawing board for your classroom. Simple. Cheap. And everyone is happy. What's wrong with that?

Power boats or other water craft? And what's your point anyhow? Planes only? Also, is Rick Ward the spokesperson for all the float operators on Schwatka? As far as I know, Rick doesn't own an aircraft.

No. Stop turning our town into a mini Ontario. What about the planes? I personally witnessed a float plane almost hit 2 boats the other day trying to land. It had to recircle and land.
