Armed robbers wielded machete, baton

Five suspects were arrested Tuesday evening

By Rhiannon Russell on February 25, 2015

Five suspects were arrested Tuesday evening “in a high-risk take down” after an armed robbery two hours earlier at a downtown business, police say.

According to Whitehorse RCMP, two males entered a business on Elliott Street at about 5 p.m. and, wielding a machete and a baton, demanded money and the location of a safe.

By the time officers arrived on scene, the suspects had fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The store clerk wasn’t injured.

Employees at other businesses in the area told the Star the incident happened at Kustom Phone Repairs, which is run out of the Inukshuk Planning and Development building between Second and Third avenues.

At about 7 p.m., Whitehorse RCMP, the Emergency Response Team and Police Dog Services stopped and surrounded a vehicle at Second Avenue and Hanson Street.

“The five occupants were taken into custody without incident in what would be deemed a high-risk take down,” police said in a news release late last night.

Items seized from the vehicle were consistent with those used during the robbery.

Police would not provide any further details this morning.

Andrea Reti, owner of the Pickapeppa restaurant on Second Avenue, said she didn’t see much of the arrests because she was in the kitchen cooking.

“All I saw was flashing lights and a bunch of police officers,” Reti told the Star this morning.

But some diners watched from the restaurant window.

One of her employees saw the emergency response team and “some guys lying on the ground,” she said.

“Whitehorse detachment continues to work with witnesses to piece together the details of the crime,” police say.

A staff member at Kustom Phone Repairs declined to comment this morning.

The store is closed for the day, according to a sign posted on the front door.

The suspects are expected to appear in court this afternoon.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to contact police at 667-5551.

Not to cut anyone down here but, crime is not new to Whitehorse. I have no idea where everybody is getting the idea that this is new and the town is going to hell. All the comments of "when I was growing up" well when you were a kid the internet did not exist and news did not spread around as fast. Now I am not saying there hasn't been an influx of shady characters to the town in the past few years but don't forget guns, drugs, and violence is NOTHING new to the Yukon.

When I was growing up in Whitehorse as a young lad an armed robbery was stealing an arm load of wood from the neighbor's woodpile. Lamenting what has happened to my beloved hometown.

Good job M, hopefully court treats it as a real crime...requiring real time.
Looking forward to reading of the breaches of what I presume may be be terms set.

A drive by shooting, machete robbery, drug busts... there are things I never thought I'd see in Whitehorse.. I never thought I'd see fighter jets in our skies or snipers on the airport roofs.. yet..911, there they were... I never thought I would see criminals be more important than victims, I never thought I would see the day that you were better off on welfare than working your butt off.... (and warmer too)..I never thought I'd see seniors kicked to the curb or food banks..I never thought I would see an elected government fighting with their electorate... I have lived through 12 Presidents of the United States and 12 Prime Ministers. This isn't the Canada I know and love. I remember when everyone was safe no matter where you were, day or night..Robbery with a machete.. does anyone know what happened to us?

Ohh, the inhumanity of it. But of course our court system will somehow take pity on the criminals.
